Description
Worker killed in trench collapse. The company owner, Aldo Magnante, was operating a backhoe and directing the work activities relating to the excavation work to construct a new sewer line. Two workers were laying pipe within an excavation that measures rougly 8 feet deep by 4.5 feet wide; the sides were nearly vertical. The excavated soils were placed along the north side of the excavation, which broke loose, causing two workers to have to run to escape being buried by the cave in. After the first collapse, the company owner removed the soil and placed it back on the north side of the excavation, and directed the workers back into the trench to finish the job. About 10 minutes later the same thing happened. One of the workers was seriously injured and the other was buried in the collapse and killed. The company had experienced a similar trench collapse a few weeks prior to the incident, and even on the same day.
